His expertise spans strategic communication, journalism, governance and human rights, with a strong focus on fostering transparency, accountability and refugee representation.
Displaced from Afghanistan, Zia rebuilt his life in Germany, where he continues to combine his professional expertise with grassroots engagement. He works as a journalist and communications consultant, monitoring refugee-related developments in Europe and producing content that raises awareness on governance, education rights and human rights.
Zia holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from Freie Universität Berlin and a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Mass Communication from Balkh University. Volunteerism is central to his work. In Berlin, Zia supports Afghan and other refugee communities through translation and integration assistance. His long-standing commitment to advocacy and community service was recognised in 2024 when he received the Elisabeth-Selbert-Initiative Human Rights Defenders Scholarship.
Motivation for Joining the RAB
Through Zia’s work and activism, he has witnessed both the challenges and the resilience of displaced people. He believes that effective policymaking must be inclusive, transparent and rooted in the voices of those directly affected. By serving on the RAB, Zia aims to amplify refugee perspectives, advocate for sustainable integration policies and strengthen trust between communities, civil society and institutions.
He is committed to contributing his skills in communication, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy to advance the Board’s mission. His vision is to ensure that refugees are recognised not only as beneficiaries of support but as active contributors to the social, cultural, and political fabric of Germany and Europe.
